You will:
- Develop your understanding of the careers education and guidance sector
- Explore the difference between a guidance interview and information and advice interviews
- Extend your knowledge of career information
- Develop the skills for effective use of career information to support student needs
- Learn how to structure an information and advice session
- Identify the relevant legislation, Statutory Guidance for Schools and Colleges and the CDI Code of Ethics and how to ensure your practice is compliant
- Explore ways of keeping skills and knowledge up to date
- Identify the role of quality standards and frameworks including The Gatsby Benchmarks, Quality in Careers Standard and Career Development Framework
- Consider how to network with your employers and others to enrich your career programme
- Develop an understanding to support compliance with relevant legislation, Statutory Guidance for Schools and Colleges and the CDI Code of Ethics
- Develop a CPD plan to keep skills and knowledge up to date
How is the course structured:
The course is offered as an online programme live via teams delivered over 5 days. The training is a mix of presentation and activity based learning. You will receive a workbook to accompany the training along with access to a bank of resources. If you are taking the accredited route, your named assessor will support you throughout, helping you to plan your work and providing constructive feedback.
You must achieve a total of 45 credits; 30 credits from Units 1-5 and 15 credits from a selection of optional units.
The mandatory units are:
- Unit 1 Preparing to work in the career development sector
- Unit 2 Reflecting on practice and continuous professional development
- Unit 3 Interact with clients to determine their need for career guidance and development
- Unit 4 Meeting the career-related information needs of clients
- Unit 5 Career choice theories and concepts to support clients
The optional units offered are:
- Unit 9 Source, evaluate and use Labour Market Information (LMI) with clients
- Unit 10 Understand how to support specific client groups to overcome barriers to learning, training and work
- Unit 11 Engage with other relevant people to help clients meet their career development needs
- Unit 12 Assist clients to apply for learning, training and work
- Unit 15 Negotiate on behalf of clients
- Unit 17 Refer clients to sources of support to meet their needs
- Unit 23 Plan, deliver and evaluate presentations
How is my work assessed:
There is no assessment work for the non-accredited route.
For the accredited route, you will provide evidence of your work practice through observations, assignments, case studies, written accounts and providing work products. Evidence is uploaded to an e-portfolio. Should your submitted work not meet the required standard, your assessor will guide you on what needs to be done before you re-submit. Accredited participants will receive a certificate from OCR.

For those who support the career leader in organising career related learning.
- Level 4 Certificate in Employability Skills (Units 1,3,12,17)
Aimed at Employability Practitioners who support clients with successful transition into learning and work. It is highly relevant for those who support long term unemployed and those experiencing barriers to progression.
