Getting into law

Such a useful book to share with clients (young student / adult) when supporting them with careers planning in Law.

The book starts by explaining the differences between a solicitor and a barrister and the other roles within the UK legal system. The explanations are clear with really good case studies throughout to help the reader learn from other people’s career journeys. The book then takes you through the different routes to qualify (for UK and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland).

Halfway through the book it focuses on work experience; ‘getting work experience is crucial in terms of helping you secure a training contract or pupillage in today’s extremely competitive market’. This section has some really top tips and I was really pleased to see volunteering (of which I am such a champion) evidenced here.

Throughout the book there are suggested links to further reading, crucial to this industry, these range from industry journals / current affairs publications / radio programmes / past cases, all of which help a client to get a better understanding of the legal system and current practices / cases and how this impacts our lives and wider society.

Overall, I would say this is an excellent resource to add to your careers library. A book that is written in a language that students and adults alike can understand and can work through to get a better grasp of this sector. I now feel far more confident to talk with clients on the pathways into Law and will definitely be using this book to share with those I support.
